BACKGROUND

This virtual discussion will provide U.S. companies an overview of how the State of Qatar is driving its ambitious economic diversification by investing in smart cities technologies and encouraging digital innovation to build its smart nation. More than $50 billion worth of business opportunities exist in the country including in in smart cities infrastructure, Internet of Things (IoT) and digital technologies. How will the State of Qatar leverage new technologies to position itself as a smart cities leader? How can Silicon Valley play a role in this development?

SPEAKER BIOS:

• Her Excellency Reem Al Mansoori (Keynote Speaker) is the Assistant Undersecretary of Digital Society Development of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, where she is leading the delivery of TASMU, Qatar’s Smart Country platform. With expertise that spans more than 2 decades of experience in digital transformation in Qatar’s government, H.E. Al Mansoori is spearheading some of the largest initiatives and programs that continue to make a substantial impact on Qatar’s technological advancements and capacity building. At TASMU, H.E. Al Mansoori heads two major departments: Digital Society and Digital Industry Development. As Head of Digital Society, she supports Qatar’s society and businesses to arm themselves with the skills, tools and knowledge they need to use ICT effectively and safely in order to participate in building Qatar’s information-based economy. As Head of Digital Industry Development, H.E. Al Mansoori is responsible for engaging with Qatar’s digital ecosystem and building a vibrant ICT sector to support Smart Qatar through innovation. These efforts enable the ICT sector to leverage both local and global digital capabilities by promoting key investment opportunities with partners across the world, bringing best practices to Qatar.

H.E. Al Mansoori is also a member of the Shura Council and is Ambassador of the Women Political Leaders in the State of Qatar (WPL), Chairperson of the 29th Session of the Women’s Parliamentarians Forum, and Ex-Officio member of the Bureau of Women Parliamentarian. H.E. Al Mansoori plays an advocacy role for protecting people’s right to live peacefully by shaping the law and solving economic, administrative and political challenges. H.E. Al Mansoori is amongst the first ever females to be appointed in Shura Council and actively contributes to achieving international peace and security by shouldering the responsibility of preserving human dignity, fundamental freedoms, and rights to enhance the lives of citizens. H.E. Al Mansoori is an advocate for empowering Qatari women; H.E. encourages them to take an active role in supporting the advancement of society. H.E. Al Mansoori has instilled positive strategic practices by driving cross-sector collaboration to achieve the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030. Her expertise and dynamic approach to leadership have equipped her to expedite project delivery and capacity building programs across not only her organization, but within the government. H.E. Al Mansoori’s ethos in leading Qatar’s digital transformation has been instrumental to TASMU and Qatar’s success. Mrs. Al Mansoori has an MSc in Computational Intelligence from the University of Plymouth, UK, and an Executive MBA from HEC Paris with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship.

• Bassam Al Mannai is the executive director of the Real Estate Directorate at QDB as such his role encompasses

Overseeing the national housing loan program of Qatar, a successful government backed housing loan program

Designed to secure houses for locals since (). The Directorate also oversees the Engineering Projects department which manages all aspects of the construction process related to QDB’s capital. As well as the (Facilities Maintenance) Department which maintains the real estate assets of the bank

He has over one decade of senior real estate experience and has advised on mega projects in Qatar including; Lusail, Msheireb Down Town Doha and the Lusail Stadium for the 2022 World Cup .

• Thaddeus Malesa was appointed the Senior Advisor for Economics and Research at Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) in January 2019. He is also responsible for QFC’s Thought Leadership. Prior to joining the QFC, Thaddeus has worked in the Gulf region for over a decade in various capacities, including six years in Qatar.

He served as a Senior consultant at the World Bank Group, and an Economic Advisor for the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics in Qatar. He also held the roles of Senior Executive at Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a Middle East Representative, Resident Analyst and Economist at PFC Energy.

Thaddeus graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor’s degree of Science in International Economics, International Finance and Commerce. He also holds a Master’s of Arts in International Economics and International Finance from Johns Hopkins University.

• Clark Williams is the Director – Marketing for Msheireb Properties, Qatar Foundation’s property development arm and one of the largest developers in the country. Clark is in charge of activation of the company’s flagship project, Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), a QAR $26B (US$7B) 76-acre regeneration project in the heart of Doha and one the smartest and most sustainable fully built city districts in the world. Clark manages teams across three areas; brand marketing, events, and PR/digital/social media.

Before coming to Doha, Clark was Senior Director, Head of Marketing for Emaar, a $17B publicly traded development company and one of the largest companies in the UAE. As Head of Marketing for Emaar, Clark managed a department of 28 personnel across brand marketing, events, graphic design (design, production & videography), and digital (paid & social), overseeing a US$ 80M+ budget.

Clark began his communications career with global communication agency Bates Saatchi & Saatchi, where he grew an agency in Eastern European over 7 years from a start-up of 5-employees to over 125 professionals. Clark was recruited to the Middle East in 2005 where he launched and managed offices for communications firm, BPG Group, in Abu Dhabi (2007-10), ran the largest marketing communications contract in the Gulf in 2010-11 (Dubai/Baghdad/London), managed BPG Group’s Doha operations (2012-13) while also heading up business development across the Gulf. Clark has worked with both public and private clients in the areas of public health, real estate, finance, transportation and destination marketing.

• Yazen is the Director for Digital Industry Development at the Ministry of Transport and Communication in Qatar. He is a senior management advisor specializing in digital cluster development, digital economy policies and large-scale transformation programs. He is a trusted advisor to many government leaders and C-level executives in the GCC region. Over 16 years of experience in leading, managing, and consulting on more than 30 public and private sectors transformation projects in the Middle East and Australasia.
